Although hanging plates in a dining room or kitchen has been a longstanding tradition I love some of the new updates to this classic idea. I recently saw a dining room with charcoal walls, and white host chairs at the table with white porcelain plates hanging nearby. The white plates against the dark wall created a bold, graphic and modern feel without being cold.

Conversely,  I just saw a display of antique teacups and saucers at the Cath Kidson store in London that was a study in white on white. The white porcelain cups and saucers looked fantastic against the white wall and grounded the cups with their small colorful accents. If you have a collection of older or inherited tea cups this would be a great way to display them.  If not, tea cups and saucers are easy to come by at vintage and antique stores. You can find them also on etsy and ebay or at Antiques and Teacups. The butterfly wall accents above are simply saucers cut into shapes with hooks on the back for hanging. It would be fun to make these or you could hire an artist to cut saucers into any shapes you desire. Wouldn't they work great in a girls bedroom or bath?
